Organizing A Neighborhood CrimeWatch BLOCK CLUB
A
Block Club is a self-help cooperative effort to
reduce crime and fear of crime. This is achieved
by citizens, law enforcement, and local government
working together. Members of a Block Club are not
asked to be vigilantes or to assume the role of
the police. However, they assist law enforcement
by OBSERVING AND REPORTING.
Reducing Vehicle Larceny
To reduce the risk of
becoming a victim of larceny
Lock your car
doors.
Never leave
anything in plain view inside the passenger
compartment (such as shopping packages, CDs,
purses, cell phones, GPS devices, etc.)
Place valuables in
the trunk while you are out shopping.
Report all
suspicious activity.
Park in well-lit
areas.
Utilize store
security or management to walk you to your car.
This puts additional eyes and ears in the
parking lot to prevent criminal behavior.
Reducing Burglaries
The
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department with
other Agencies and Community Partners are working
non-stop to reduce burglaries. There are four basic
types of precautions which must be provided to
significantly reduce the chance of a burglary
Reducing Your Risk of Being a Victim
BE AWARE
Knowledge is power. By always being aware of your
surroundings and taking steps to prevent an attack,
you lower the risk of being the victim of a violent
crime. Know the location, street name and
surrounding buildings, in case it becomes necessary
for you to call 911. Listen to your instincts. If
you ever feel uncomfortable or in danger at any
time, leave immediately.
In April 1976, the City of
Indianapolis, The Indianapolis News, and the Greater Indianapolis
Progress Committee formulated the concepts that have guided the
existing CrimeWatch Program. The purpose of the CrimeWatch is to
create a self-help cooperative effort to reduce crime and the fear of
crime in neighborhoods. This is achieved by citizens, law
enforcement, and local government working together.
CrimeWatch is a division of the
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Citizens participating
in this program become more aware of crime prevention techniques that
can help lower their risk of becoming victims. A pro-active approach
against crime is taken through communication and cooperation of
citizens, local government and law enforcement.
